Present Program Emphasis and Goals

Research

The major goal of Dr. Luginbuhl research program is to develop sustainable forage/ browse-based feeding and management systems for meat goats. Research has been concentrated in the following areas:

• Evaluate under grazing, the potential of cool-season and warm-season annual and perennial forages for meat goats.

• Evaluate the use of goats as biological control agents in weed and brush-infested pastures and woodlots when grazing alone or in combination with other livestock species.

• Evaluate the browse potential of fodder tree species in agroforestry systems for meat goats.

• Develop non-pharmaceutical approaches to anthelmintics for the control of gastrointestinal parasites.

• Evaluate byproduct feeds as protein and/or energy sources for meat goats fed forage-based diets.

• Determination of copper tolerance and nutritional requirements for meat goats.

Extension

The major responsibilities of Dr. Luginbuhl extension program are as follows:

• Providing statewide leadership in the development of the expanding meat goat industry through training, technology transfer and educational programs designed for cooperative extension agents, farmers and agribusiness professionals.

• Serving as resource for information on all aspects of meat goat production for county agents, farmers and other agribusiness professionals through websites, publications, conferences, agent training, farmers' and county meetings, field days, and personal communication.

• Acting as the NCSU liaison for the NC Meat Goat Association, the NC Dairy Goat Breeders Association, the Smokey Mountain Goat Association, the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and other county-based meat goat associations.

International Professional Involvement

Cuba

• In collaboration with J. Paul Mueller, in 1995 established linkages with scientists in Cuba in conjunction with Fitogen 95, an international workshop concerning native plant genetic resources. Invited in 1996 by the Cuban Institute of Pasture and Forage Research to visit the Niña Bonita experiment station, The Institute of Animal Science, and farms and experiment stations. Presented a paper at I International Silvopastoral Workshop on Trees for use in Livestock Systems held at the Indio Hatuey experiment station in Matanzas Province. In 1998, helped organize and assisted in a 5-day statistics workshop focused on experimental design (held at the Niña Bonita experiment station) for Cuban agricultural scientists. Presented a paper at the 1998 III International Silvopastoral Workshop on Trees and Shrubs in Livestock Systems held at the Indio Hatuey Experiment Station in Matanzas Province.

Morocco

• Co-coordinator of Nutrition Component of Title XII Small Ruminant CRSP Morocco project (1988 -1993). Responsibilities involved elaboration of research workplans, annual reports, scientific publications, conduct of grazing experiments, participation in technical meetings, scientific collaboration with Moroccan scientists of the Hassan II Agronomy and Veterinary Institute in Rabat and the National School of Agriculture in Meknes.

Perú

• Project leader for the implementation of a collaborative extension program designed to increase dairy cattle production utilizing local resources in the Andean Mountains of the department of Ancash, Perú. Other duties included administrative liaison between Swiss and Peruvian government officials on matters relating to project design and management (1976-1979). o Coordinator, housing resettlement program for earthquake victims. Tingua, department of Ancash, Perú (1977 -1979).

Short term Assignments

North Sumatra, Indonesia - Title XII Small Ruminant CRSP

• Trained Indonesian scientists of the Sumatra Research Institute for Animal Production and conducted grazing behavior experiment in rubber tree plantation using sheep as a biological method to control weeds (September 1991).

Pakistan - National Academy of Sciences, BOSTID

• Conducted pre-grant site visits to Pakistani scientists for the Pakistan Agricultural Research Program funded by USAID (June 1991).

Morocco - Title XII Small Ruminant CRSP

• Collaborated with Moroccan scientists of the Hassan II Agronomy and Veterinary Institute in Rabat and the National School of Agriculture in Meknes in the identification of potential project sites and research needs in the areas of nutrition and by-product utilization by small ruminants to enhance scientific understanding of maintaining and improving the sustainability of existing cereal/livestock production systems (June/July 1982 - July 1985 - October 1987).
