Education

Steven P. Hart  Assistant Research Professor  June  26, 1950

Paris Junior College, TX     A.A.        1969     Agriculture
Texas A&M University       B.S.        1972     Dairy Science
Texas A&M University       M.S.        1977     Animal Science
Virginia Polytechnic         Ph.D.        1981     Animal Science Institute and State Univ.

1997 to present, Research Scientist II with some Extension duties for the E (Kika) de la Garza Institute for Goat Research at Langston University.  Collaborated on research with tannins for control of gastrointestinal nematodes.  Also studies on the use of short duration-long rest interval rotation grazing systems on gastrointestinal nematodes. Participated in study to characterize dewormer resistance in goats in Oklahoma.  Conducted multi-location study with Native American Nations on the use of goats for vegetation management.   Conducted numerous parasite control workshops.  Investigated the use of high quality pastures for goat milk production.  Conducted grazing studies on the use of cool season perennial pastures for goat production. Studied nutritional flushing of goats for increased reproduction. Also, investigated the use of domperidone for mitigating the effects of fescue toxicity. Conducted research on the nutrient requirements of growing kids.  Conducting demonstrations on the use of goats for brush and weed control. Includes a long-term study on the use of goats for control of sericea lespedeza and development of a suitable goat production system for Kansas.   Numerous extension talks on various aspects of goat production both within the state and in seven other states.

1995 to 1997, Acting Director for the E. (Kika) de la Garza Institute for Goat Research. Directing and Coordinating research programs for dairy, Angora, meat and cashmere goats. Actively involved with producer groups and goat product marketing coops. Collaborated with USDA Center for Veterinary Medicine and Laboratory Committee of the National Conference of Interstate Milk Shippers to develop a protocol to evaluate antibiotic residue test kits for use with goat milk. Directed conduct of the test and submission of data to above groups. Conducted preliminary study on antiinflammatory response and elevated somatic cell in late lactation dairy goats. Involved in research on cool and warm season legumes and grazing systems for Angora goats. Conducting research on energy requirements of goats. Investigated the use of near-infrared spectroscopy to predict mohair quality.

1992-1994, Assistant Research Professor for the E. (Kika) de la Garza Goat Research Institute, investigating warm season legumes and grazing systems for Angora goats.  Conducting studies utilizing natural tannin levels to increase bypass protein.  Conducted research studies to determine energy requirements of grazing and browsing goats. Participated in a collaborative study to predict mohair quality using near-infrared spectroscopy.

1981-1991, Research Animal Scientist (Nutrition) for the USDA-ARS Forage and Livestock Research Laboratory, El Reno, OK.  Conducted research on preservation and feeding value of sorghum silage harvested at different weights of cut.  Extensive studies on associative effects between grain and forage.  Investigated effect of restricted intake on rate and efficiency of gain in feeder lambs.  Compared forage and animal production from grazed turnips and grazed wheat.  Studied efficiency of supplement utilization on wheat pasture.  Have investigated genotype-environment interaction in goats and studied efficiency of nutrient utilization in three genotypes of goats.
